I'll drink to that!!!! well, we are supposed to, right? it said so in an article didnt it???? Jenni, as usual, an amazing post, full of excellent statements, and common sense, if you are ill, you can't do much exercise, certainly most of what has been suggested/recommended, either by RA doctors or anyone else. To be honest, I think this thread is pushing people to to things which will make them more ill, I am aware this is not the intention, but it could cause many problems. For those who can cope with this, good luck to them I presume their RA is controlled, and therefore they feel well enough to do this. Unfortunately, some of us have uncontrolled disease, and just getting through a working day is more than enough. Well, thats it I've had my threepennorth as my nan would have said!! BARBARA

Phew! Monstrous post and different (though on-the-whole welcome) poles of opinions. It has brought up a lot of feeling & really woken me up to what may/lies ahead for me. I'm relatively new to all this. What I've learned is that RA is highly individual and frustratingly full of ups and downs. I think the best advice for anyone has to be that little voice in their minds that tells them when to rest (sometimes it is blatantly obvious!) and when to do what you can - within your own personal limits - not some one else's.
As someone who has watched their arm and leg muscle tone diminish by half in half a year - I worry for the underlying strength my joints may need to keep me moving. I can't force myself to get that bulk back - my mind/body wont let me. Doesn't everyone have this inbuilt safety mechanism?

....& always try to remember that sometimes that little voice doesnt speak up or get heard til the day after, so best add the "everything in moderation" rule to your very wise points about personal limits, John x
.....wise words from the gal who' s seems to have a terrible habit of sticking her hands over her ears when that l'il voice kicks off........ ;)
take care John, hope to speak again soon :)

Would just like to say that its fantastic to have Alice encouraging exercising for RA, I dont want to appear anti exercise. For someone like me, who has pain every day, all day, as soon as I walk my feet give me so much pain it can make me shout out. The swelling is also always there, for anyone else who has constant pain, with, lets not forget, a chronic condition, to try to do more exercise will cause more damage to joints. I think Alice and anyone else who is able to exercise like this is amazing, but lets not forget those who cant BARBARA
